
CCTV night vision explained: IR, starlight and colour-at-night
How CCTV night vision actually works, the difference between infrared and starlight sensors, what '30m IR' really means, and how to get footage that identifies people after dark.
Why night footage is the footage that matters
Most burglaries of unoccupied homes happen in darkness, and most CCTV disappointment happens the morning after — grainy grey shapes that could be anyone. A camera's daytime image tells you almost nothing about the recording that will actually matter, which is why night performance should lead any buying decision.
Three technologies dominate: infrared (IR), starlight sensors, and active-illumination colour night vision. Each suits different positions on the same property.
Infrared: the reliable workhorse
IR cameras flood the scene with light your eyes can't see and record in black and white. It works in total darkness and it's on every camera we fit as a minimum. The '30m IR' on a spec sheet is the illumination throw — but identification range is roughly a third of it: a 30m IR camera identifies faces reliably to about 10m, which is plenty for doors and drives when positioned properly.
IR's weaknesses are reflections (never point it through glass) and over-exposure up close, where faces at the doorstep can white out. Good installers set IR intensity per camera at commissioning — one of those small steps that separates fitted-properly from plugged-in.
Starlight and colour at night
Starlight sensors are simply far more light-sensitive: under a streetlamp or garden lighting they keep recording in full colour where ordinary cameras have switched to gray IR mode. Colour matters more than people expect — 'dark hoodie' becomes 'red jacket, blue jeans', and vehicle colour survives into the report you give the police.
Active colour night vision adds a soft white light when motion triggers, doubling as a deterrent: the intruder knows they've been seen. It suits doorways and gardens; less so a bedroom-window-facing wall at 3am, which is why placement judgement matters.
Getting night vision right on your property
Mix technologies by position: starlight or colour-at-night on the approaches you most need to identify people; standard IR for general coverage zones; and ambient help where it's cheap — a £20 dusk-to-dawn bulb by the back door upgrades every camera that sees it.
