Hikvision NVR setup: the complete UK guide

Hikvision NVR setup from unboxing to phone app: hard disk installation, network and internet setup, adding cameras, Hik-Connect — and the security steps most self-installs miss.

Hard disk installation and formatting

A Hikvision NVR ships without storage more often than buyers expect. It takes a surveillance-rated drive (WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk — desktop drives fail early under 24/7 writing), fitted to the caddy and SATA connectors inside the case. On first boot the NVR will show the disk as 'uninitialised': format it from Menu → Storage, and recording can begin.

Sizing rule of thumb: modern H.265+ compression stores roughly a month of 4-camera 4K motion-triggered footage on a single mid-size surveillance drive. Continuous recording multiplies that requirement several times over — decide which you want before buying the disk.

Network and internet setup (the step that defeats most people)

Cable the NVR to your router, and in Menu → Network either enable DHCP (easiest) or set a static IP outside your router's DHCP pool (best, so remote access never breaks when the router reboots). Then enable Platform Access — this is what connects the NVR to Hik-Connect for remote viewing without any router port-forwarding.

If your NVR 'works at home but not remotely', it's almost always one of: Platform Access disabled, the verification code not set, wrong DNS servers, or double-NAT from a second router. All fixable in minutes when you know where to look — and the exact rabbit hole our repair call-outs most often start in.

Adding and setting up cameras

PoE models are nearly plug-and-play: connect each camera to the NVR's PoE ports and they activate and appear one by one. Cameras on your LAN instead need activating (they ship 'inactive' with no password) via the NVR or SADP tool, then adding by IP.

Then the part no menu does for you: aim and focus each camera against real targets — faces at the doorstep, plates on the drive — and draw motion/AcuSense zones that cover approaches, not the road. Ten minutes here is the difference between evidence and wallpaper.

Hik-Connect on your phone

Create a Hik-Connect account, add the device by scanning the QR code on the NVR (you'll need the verification code you set during setup), and grant notifications. Share access with family from within the app rather than sharing your password.

The security steps most self-installs skip

Change every default password — NVR and each camera. Set a non-obvious verification code. Update firmware at install and yearly after. Disable UPnP unless you know why you need it. Unsecured Hikvision devices are actively scanned for on the public internet; five minutes of hardening removes you from that pool.
