CCTV wiring and setup: what professional fitting involves
How professional CCTV wiring is actually done in UK homes — cable types, routes, weatherproofing, and the setup steps that separate a fitted system from a working one.
The cables behind a clean install
Modern IP systems run on a single Cat5e/Cat6 cable per camera — power and data together (PoE). Older analogue and Turbo HD systems use coax with separate 12V power. Either way, exterior-grade cable matters: indoor cable in UK weather turns brittle and lets water track into connections within a couple of winters.
Wiring a security camera badly is the most common fault we're called to fix: cables through window frames, joints wrapped in tape instead of junction boxes, and power supplies dangling in sheds. It works — until the first storm.
Routes: how professionals hide cable
The craft is in the routing: along soffits and fascias where cable vanishes against the trim, through wall cavities where construction allows, and in discreet white trunking where it doesn't. Drill holes angle upward from outside so water can't follow the cable in, and every exterior entry gets sealed and dripped-looped.
Loft routes save external runs on most two-storey homes: down the corner of an exterior wall, into the loft, and across to the recorder — one visible metre instead of ten.
Setting up CCTV so it actually records
Wiring done, the setup begins: recorder storage formatted, cameras aimed and focused at identification distances, motion zones drawn to cover approaches rather than passing traffic, night mode tested in real darkness, timestamps synced (footage with wrong times causes real evidential problems), and remote access configured with proper passwords.
Then the test that matters: walk every approach to your property and review the footage. If you can't identify yourself, the system needs adjusting — not the excuse 'it looked fine in the app'.
DIY or professional?
Confident with a drill, ladders and networking? A weekend gets a wireless kit up serviceably. Wired systems are less forgiving: cable runs, terminations and weatherproofing reward experience, and mistakes hide until the worst moment.
Our installs include all of the above plus a 5-year parts-and-labour warranty — and because we quote each property exactly, you'll know your fixed price before anyone climbs a ladder. WhatsApp us your postcode for the number.
